Chocolate Breakfast of Champions Smoothie Bowl

Kyle is kind of like this insanely unbelievably wonderful husband sometimes.  What I mean by that is he doesn't wake me up in the morning until coffee is ready + he's already well into making breakfast.  We live in a loft so sometimes he grinds the beans + blends our smoothies in the bathroom so he doesn't make any noise.

While this may be a self-preservation technique as I more closely resemble an evil sea witch than a human being in the mornings, I think some high praise can be doled out here.

Kyle + I went on a very successful weight loss journey in 2012 + one of our hot secrets was to drink a smoothie every morning.  That worked great so we just kept at it.  And at it.  And at it.  He tried to mix them up every once and a while with spinach or super foods but mostly it just ended up being the same berry smoothie every morning.

Since 2012.

He made one for me the other day for me and I burst into tears.

Conclusion: I'm over it.

So he's been trying out some new recipes + our favourite is this chocolate smoothie bowl.  He found it on Food Bloggers of Canada + it's called the Give Me Chocolate Smoothie Bowl by Hannah Sunderani a plant-based recipe blogger at Two Spoons.

I asked Kyle if he ever changes anything about it

"Well sometimes we run out of ingredients + I make it anyway + it's never as good."

So no, he doesn't change anything about it.  Even the peanut butter plays an integral role in making it the right consistency.  The toppings you can make up though.  Apples + peanuts + dark chocolate shavings + chia seeds + tropical muesli + granola + cashews + almonds + craisins + coconut + berries (fresh or frozen) all make lovely toppings.  Because the smoothie is very smoothie I really like adding some crunch // granola or muesli fill you up a little longer // chia seeds make you feel like it might legit be healthy // berries or apples or whatever add some fun bonus - mix up the same thing every day flavours.

So basically this post is just a review -

hell yes we love it + it's like having dessert for breakfast.  Even I who don't like chocolate + banana together got over that pretty quickly.

Ingredients

  • 2 frozen bananas (approx. ¾ cups)
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1 espresso shot (we just use some of the coffee leftover from our Chemex)
  • ⅓ cup almond milk, plus more if needed
  • 1 tbsp all natural peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • pinch cinnamon

Just blend all the ingredients together quietly so as not to wake your sea witch + put it in a bowl + top with whatever you feel as long as it's real pretty.  Try not to eat it every day for the next 5 years so as not to get sick of it, but you can eat it a couple times for sure.  Enjoy!
